International Hydrogen Energy Centre (IHEC)
The International Hydrogen Energy Centre (IHEC) is a globally influential technology innovation center established in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and supported by the Beijing Municipal Government. It is spearheaded by the Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute (BTIDRI). The center operates under the Beijing Yitong Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Institute, a non-profit organization established by BTIDRI. Officially recognized by UNIDO, IHEC is integrated into UNIDO's global cooperation network.
In July 2021, IHEC was officially inaugurated by the Beijing Municipal Government. By November 2021, the center had completed all preparatory work and organizational structuring, marking the beginning of its full-scale operations.
IHEC has established its R&D and industrial headquarters in Beijing, focusing on hydrogen energy application research, technological development, and international cooperation. Leveraging the hydrogen energy industry chain initially constructed by BTIDRI, the center actively promotes application demonstration projects in the hydrogen energy sector.
In the transportation sector, IHEC successfully conducted commercial demonstration operations of hydrogen fuel cell buses in Beijing and Zhangjiakou during the 2022 Winter Olympics. It also promoted the demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell logistics vehicles and cold-chain logistics vehicles in Beijing Daxing.
In the industrial sector, IHEC focuses on cutting-edge technologies such as renewable energy-coupled green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol production, hydrogen blending in natural gas, co-combustion of ammonia and coal, and biomass gasification. The center undertakes advanced technology development, the construction of shared technology platforms, and project demonstrations. Through the innovative application of hydrogen energy technologies, IHEC is committed to driving deep decarbonization in industrial sectors and providing robust technological support for achieving sustainable development goals.
